CPR Renewal for the Dental Practitioner (NON-CREDIT COURSE)

Designed for all members of the dental team who need to renew CPR requirements for relicensure. CPR Instructors are affiliates of the American Heart Association (AHA). Upon suc­cessful completion of this training, participants will receive an American Heart Association (AHA) course completion card with a suggested retraining date of two years. This course fulfills CDE requirements for CPR certification renewal. This course is not awarded CEU. CPR class is held in person, at the MSDA office.

8 Hour Radiation Safety Update (8 CE Credits)

This syllabus is intended to provide information for the continuing education course, “Essentials of Dental Radiography for the Dental Assistant: Oral Radiography Review Course.”  The course is designed to provide dental assistants with eight hours of continuing education in the didactic and clinical knowledge necessary to maintain certification in radiation hygiene, radiation protection, and radiographic techniques. Since the use of dental imaging is ubiquitous in dental practices, the course also provides a review of dental radiography appropriate for dental hygienists and dentists.

Lecture presentations will emphasize the potential hazards associated with the use of ionizing radiation and safety precautions to be utilized in dental radiography. Time permitting, the theory and techniques used for the placement, exposure, and processing of dental radiographs will be reviewed.  Basic concepts of digital imaging will be discussed, compared, and contrasted with conventional radiography as appropriate.  Professional, legal, and ethical considerations in dental radiography will be emphasized throughout the course.

Learning Objectives:  

  • Understand the theory and techniques used for the placement, exposure, and processing of dental radiographs
  • Understand the basic concepts of digital imaging
  • Compare and contrast digital imaging with conventional radiography
  • Understand the legal and ethical considerations in dental radiography

P.A.N.D.A., which stands for Prevent Abuse and Neglect through Dental Awareness, started in Missouri in 1992 to address the lack of child abuse reporting by dental professionals even though between 65-75% of all physical abuse involves injuries to the head, neck, and mouth. This course is designed to educate dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and others about the problems of child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, elder abuse and neglect, and human trafficking. This course aims to teach recognition of the indicators of abuse and neglect, inform about the legal and ethical responsibility in reporting and referring victims, and educate to become knowledgeable to recognize, report and refer.

Learning Objectives:                                                                                                                                                    Upon completion of the Mid-Atlantic P.A.N.D.A. course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the background of abuse, bullying, and neglect and effects of maltreatment of children, adults, vulnerable adults, the elderly and trafficked victims.
  • Distinguish findings of abuse and neglect, explain the oral health care provider’s role, ethical responsibilities in reporting, and identify when and how to refer to local and national agencies.
