This syllabus is intended to provide information for the continuing education course, “Essentials of Dental Radiography for the Dental Assistant: Oral Radiography Review Course.”  The course is designed to provide dental assistants with eight hours of continuing education in the didactic and clinical knowledge necessary to maintain certification in radiation hygiene, radiation protection, and radiographic techniques. Since the use of dental imaging is ubiquitous in dental practices, the course also provides a review of dental radiography appropriate for dental hygienists and dentists.

Lecture presentations will emphasize the potential hazards associated with the use of ionizing radiation and safety precautions to be utilized in dental radiography. Time permitting, the theory and techniques used for the placement, exposure, and processing of dental radiographs will be reviewed.  Basic concepts of digital imaging will be discussed, compared, and contrasted with conventional radiography as appropriate.  Professional, legal, and ethical considerations in dental radiography will be emphasized throughout the course.

Learning Objectives:  

  • Understand the theory and techniques used for the placement, exposure, and processing of dental radiographs
  • Understand the basic concepts of digital imaging
  • Compare and contrast digital imaging with conventional radiography
  • Understand the legal and ethical considerations in dental radiography

Infection Control: Strategies for Compliance (3 CE)

For decades the CDC has provided Infection Control Guidelines to help us navigate safely through clinical practice. The goal of which is to prevent disease transmission to patients, staff and the community at large. When new pathogens emerge i.e. COVID-19 and others, research and enhanced guidelines are added to our existing policies and procedures by the CDC, ADA, OSHA and other regulatory agencies. In 2016, CDC developed the Infection Prevention Checklist for the Dental Setting; a clear, concise tool designed to evaluate in office compliance with both the administrative and clinical policies and procedures. As the CDC, ADA and OSHA provide updated regulations and guidelines for Emerging Pathogens in dentistry, they are added to our basic programs. This program reviews the updated guidelines as well as the Bloodborne, Airborne and Emerging Diseases/COVID-19 in Dentistry; and the policies and procedures outlined in the 2016 Infection Control checklist. The current Summary of Guidance during COVID-19 by the ADA is also presented. Numerous handouts are provided, including the fillable 2016 CDC checklist designed to evaluated compliance with the Infection control guidelines in your practice.

Course Objectives:

  1. Comprehend the 2016 CDC Guidelines for Infection control in the Dental Setting, and updated protocols for Emerging Pathogens
  2. Utilize the CDC checklist to evaluate current office policies and procedures
  3. Incorporate the recommendations into their Standard of Care to achieve compliance
  4. Review the ADA Summary of Guidance for Emerging Pathogens Adhere to Standard Precautions, and any additional health and safety requirements that might be recommended specific to Emerging Pathogens, including COVID-19
  5. Remain vigilant and stay current with the evolving body of research for emerging pathogens, including COVID-19

Proper Pharmacologic Prescribing and Disposal for Dental Practitioners (2 CE)

Maryland dentists need two hours of a “Proper Prescribing and Disposal” course. This course is approved for providing the necessary two hours of instruction mandated by the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners.
