Maryland dentists need two hours of a “Proper Prescribing and Disposal” course. This course is approved for providing the necessary two hours of instruction mandated by the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners. The goal of this course is to articulate and inform Maryland dental licensees about the role dental practitioners play in preventing prescription drug abuse, prescription drug addiction and ways of mitigating addiction through Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs).
Objectives:
- Write a prescription in proper format for an opioid pain reliever
- List the nonopioid drugs as opioid alternatives for post-surgery pain control
- Know the 5 DEA schedules of drugs and the important drugs within each
- List the most abused prescribed drugs
- Recognize dependent patients and doctor shoppers
- Know best practices for handling and disposal of controlled substances
- Be familiar with support services for dependent practitioners
